Zen Cart Search Engine Optimization
The Problem:
Currently, Zen Cart’s layout and linking trees make it almost impossible for the search engine crawlers to find all of your products. If search engines can’t find your product, then prospective customers certainly won’t be able to find your products (at least not without a determined effort).
Can Google, Yahoo, and Bing find every one of your products on your site? Did you know you can test it? If you run a Google search using “site:yourdomain.com” you will get a count of how many pages Google is currently indexing from your web site. If you compare that to the sum of your product, categories and manufacturer listings you will notice that the number of pages indexed in Google is far less than the actual number of pages on your web site.
Our Solution:
Search engine optimization requires a four-pronged approach:
- Search engine-friendly URLs,
- Page structure modifications,
- Search engine accessibility, and
- Page indexing.
Here's how our module addresses each of these:
Search Engine-Friendly URLs
One of the biggest flaws within Zen Cart is that it makes it so darned difficult for search engines to find all of your product pages. The first thing I do is get all of the sites’ pages indexed within Google, Yahoo and Bing (we guarantee results on this piece of the puzzle).
Page Structure Modifications
The second order of business is making slight changes to the page structure so that the crawlers get a better idea of what’s on the page and what you want to highlight. For example, on the product detail pages we want the crawlers to find the product name and description.
Search Engine Accessibility
All search engines need to know where they and are not allowed on your web site. We will give them specific instructions for where we want them to go. All of the major search engine companies (Google, Yahoo, Microsoft and Ask) got together and came up with guidelines for our instructions for their crawlers, and our solution follows those guidelines so that your web site gets the maximum exposure on each search engine.
Page Indexing
Lastly, we need to take into consideration the complete URL of each page on your site. The default URL structure for Zen Cart isn’t search-engine friendly. My software supports heavily modified ZenCart shopping carts; allows website indexing by web crawlers in multiple languages; and does not break any installed ZenCart add-ons, modules or templates/themes. It rewrites the URLs to be much more legible (ex: yourdomain.com/product-name/).
